What Is Reverse Painting?

REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS

REVERSE PAINTING IS AN OLD ART FORM, PRACTICED IN ASIA AND EUROPE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS.

IN REVERSE PAINTING, THE IMAGES ARE PAINTED ON ONE SIDE OF THE GLASS AND VIEWED ON THE OTHER.  THE TECHNIQUE REQUIRES A LOT OF FORETHOUGHT ON THE PART OF THE ARTIST. PAINTING IS DONE IN LAYERS, IN REVERSE ORDER OF THE METHOD USED IN PAINTING ON CANVAS OR OTHER SURFACES.  THE FIRST BRUSH STROKES ARE WHAT THE EYE WILL SEE INITIALLY.

DETAILS AND SHADING ARE PAINTED FIRST, THEN THE FILL-IN AND BACKGROUND COLORS ARE ADDED.  THERE IS LITTLE ROOM FOR ERROR, OTHER THAN COMPLETELY WIPING OR SCRAPING THE GLASS CLEAN AND STARTING OVER.  THE ARTIST CAN NOT ADD DETAIL OR HIGHLIGHTS, TOUCH UP OR MAKE CORRECTIONS.

THE RESULTS ARE PAINTINGS WITH VIBRANT COLOR AND BRILLIANCE. THE REVERSE PAINTING TECHNIQUE ADDS ANOTHER DIMENSION TO THE WORK.

THESE PAINTINGS DONE ARE ON THE BACK SIDES OF VINTAGE WINDOWS, RESCUED FROM OLD HOUSES IN VERMONT. THE FRAMES HAVE BEEN REFINISHED AND THE GLASS PANES HAVE BEEN SECURED WITH GLAZING COMPOUND AND GLAZING POINTS WHERE NECESSARY.  THE PAINTINGS ARE DONE IN ACRYLICS. THE BACKGROUNDS ARE PAINTED ON WOOD, WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE BACK OF THE FRAME, CREATING A 3D EFFECT.   SMALLER PAINTINGS ON FRAMED GLASS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE.

ALL DESIGNS ARE ORIGINAL CREATIONS.  EACH PAINTING IS A “ONE OF A KIND”. SINCE THEY ARE PAINTED DIRECTLY ON THE GLASS, PRINTS AND DUPLICATES ARE NOT POSSIBLE.
